WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — I’ll let you in on a little secret: Crossword puzzles that are accepted for publication are not necessarily published in the order in which they get the “Crossword — Yes!” email from our editors. If a constructor has submitted multiple puzzles and the editors decide that the third submission is needed more than the first for some reason, the third one will see the light of day first.

Maybe that’s not really a secret, but it explains the notes from the constructors Amanda Chung and Karl Ni below.

Now do this puzzle as fast as you can. Crosswords are so ephemeral, you know?

1A: “What you might do if you skip a step” sounds, on the surface, like the answer should be something like RETURN IT TO IKEA AND CLAIM THAT IT WAS BROKEN WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT, but that would never fit. I knew we were looking at a clue that was hinting at actually skipping a stair on a staircase, so at first I had FALL, then SLIP. Neither worked. The answer is TRIP.

10A: The entry AVA has appeared in the New York Times Crossword puzzle 435 times, 12 of which were about the director Ava DuVernay. Now that Ms. DuVernay has become a staple of our crossword, I decided it was time to inaugurate her into a very special club.

14A: Hi, kids! Back in the 1960s and 1970s editions of the golden age of television, you couldn’t swing a ukulele without running into the singer DON HO on someone’s variety show, including his own. Mr. HO was known for his ballad crooning, as well as for being Hawaii's “Ambassador of Aloha” to the world. Around these parts, he is primarily known for getting flagged because of his surname. If any of you need me, I’ll be picking comments out of the spam filter for the rest of the day.

31A: “Part of a Swiss roll?” refers to a roll of cash, not the dessert. The answer is FRANC.

61A: If something is “Off the table?” it usually means that the idea or item is no longer going to be discussed or part of a negotiation. I am in possession of a teenage young man, so if it’s off the table, it’s been EATEN.

1D: Hmm. Please see Mr. Erik Agard’s notes below. I hope I’m wrong, too.

8D: Hi again, kids! The classic 1931 film “The Champ” was most notable for starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, a child star who grew up to play, among many other roles, Perry White in the “Superman” film series from the 1970s and 1980s, where he — you know what? Just remember that Wallace Beery was in “The Champ.”

15D: “Jabberwocky” was a wonderful work by Lewis Carroll. The contraction that starts it is, of course, ’TWAS:

’TWAS brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

  All mimsy were the borogoves,

   And the mome raths outgrabe.

18D: Pro-tip — If you have a four-letter entry and the clue is about oil or spots, you can be pretty sure that the answer will be ACNE or ZITS. In this puzzle, it’s ACNE.

26D: Hi, kids, me again! Ralph Nader is a lawyer and a four-time presidential candidate who has been involved in such political causes as consumer protection, environmentalism and government reform. More recently, you might have heard his name bandied about when your parents were discussing the advantages and disadvantages of third-party voting. And he’s still hard at work.

56D: Did you think the clue was hinting at a gas filling station? “Letters at a filling station?” does not refer to M.P.G. It hints at another place where you might get a filling: the dentist’s office. The answer is D.D.S.

I got the idea of this theme fairly quickly, as I was solving around the bottom of the grid and got the revealer at 56A, DISAPPEARING INK.

We all loved the disappearing ink prank when we were children — it’s much harder to pull off when your main method of written communication is a keyboard — but what does it have to do with the theme? The theme entries (denoted by asterisks) are a seemingly arbitrary and somewhat odd list of phrases.

It turns out that the liquid DISAPPEARING INK revealer is telling us to look for the word ‘INK,” which slowly fades as you go from top to bottom.

For example, the top theme entry at 16A is “Insomniac's complaint,” which is clued straight; I CAN’T SLEEP A WINK includes the full word INK at the end. Similarly, 23A, KITCHEN SIN (which is tough to parse, even with the clue), drops the letter K. The rest of the answers drop the N, then the I, and the last theme entry has none of those letters at all, which means the INK has disappeared completely. I found that confusing at first, because it leaves us with a somewhat awkward entry (MAKES YOUTH for the phrase “makes you think”) but I guess it makes sense. HOT P.I. (for the phrase (“hot pink”) felt arbitrary to me.

Overall, I liked the concept but kept wishing that the resulting phrases after the letters were removed were slightly more in the language.

Amanda Chung and Karl Ni: This is our first puzzle ever accepted by The New York Times, after Erik jump-started our construction efforts. We received the news when we were in Oregon, watching the total solar eclipse. Amanda still remembers the email, which Will Shortz closed with “Welcome aboard!” Among the clues, we can appreciate the pair of nods to California along with the lead into “Jabberwocky,” one of Karl’s favorite poems.

Erik Agard: Of the clues not written by us, my favorite is 31-Across. I wish I had thought of that! I’m unsure about 1D — I fear that “making” implies that those groups had more agency in the historical creation of that system than they actually did, or that the “?” at the end of the clue is a bit too flippant for the subject matter. I hope I’m wrong.

Thanks to Amanda and Karl for helping turn an O.K. idea into a great idea, as they always do.

Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.

Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
